Dec. 17, 2024

Dear colleagues,

As another successful semester at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ comes to a close, we’d like to provide information regarding campus operations during winter break. Final exams concluded on Saturday, December 14 and our final fall commencements are on Wednesday, December 18. Classes resume on Tuesday, January 21.

While this is a relatively quiet time with low campus occupancy, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ will remain open Monday - Friday during regular business hours. The university will close on only two (2) state-recognized holidays: December 25 and January 1.

Taking Leave during Winter Break
Vice presidents and deans should exercise discretion to determine staffing to meet the needs in their areas. Please consult with your unit’s leadership regarding staffing over the break.

Administrative faculty and classified staff may take leave during winter break, with supervisory approval. Employees approved for leave during this period should forward phones to a number that will be answered and/or responded to on that same business day and set up out-of-office messages for incoming emails. For assistance with forwarding phones, contact Telecommunications at telecom@unlv.edu. Please see the information, below, for leave by employee category.

Academic faculty on "B" (9-month) contracts
Are not under contract from December 23 through January 10 and therefore are not required to account for these break days

Administrative faculty
May use accrued annual leave.

Classified staff
May use

  • Annual leave
  • Compensatory time
    • Per the Nevada Administrative Code, classified staff must use compensatory time before annual leave. The only exception is when using compensatory time would result in the loss of annual leave at the end of the calendar year.
    • Note: Earning compensatory time for working overtime must be approved in advance and must serve the legitimate business needs of the university.

If you have additional questions, please speak with your supervisor or email hr@unlv.edu.

Existing building open and close schedules will remain in effect for buildings on the Maryland Campus serviced by Facilities Management during winter break. If modifications are needed for your building, consult with your Facilities Management Building Liaison and submit a request through .

Please allow two (2) business days for requests to be completed.

There will not be any changes to building access on the Shadow Lane Campus.

Buildings on both campuses will be locked on December 25 and January 1 when the campus is closed.
