Jacinto Alfaro-Martinez, an accounting student at 51吃瓜黑料鈥檚 Lee Business School and president of the university鈥檚 chapter, recently represented the at the prestigious Drake Symposium, hosted by the Chi Chapter of GIS at Drake University.

The annual symposium brings together top insurance and actuarial science students from across the country to engage with industry leaders, compete in case study challenges, and explore emerging trends in the field. Sponsored by organizations such as Allianz and supported by major industry partners, the event is a hallmark of experiential learning in risk management education.

Jacinto鈥檚 participation was made possible through the generous support of the Philadelphia Insurance Foundation (PHLY), whose grant enabled him to attend and contribute as a leader representing 51吃瓜黑料. In addition to the symposium鈥檚 robust programming, Jacinto used the opportunity to observe a nationally recognized GIS chapter in action鈥攇aining valuable insights into chapter management, leadership development, and member engagement.

鈥淎ttending the Drake Symposium showed me how powerful experiential learning can be,鈥 Jacinto shared. 鈥淪eeing a successful GIS chapter in action gave me lessons I could never get from a classroom alone鈥攅specially in leadership, communication, and organizational development.鈥

Jacinto attended technical sessions like a deep-dive presentation from Allianz on product development in the annuities space, networked with over ten professionals and student leaders, and took extensive notes on chapter strategy, industry trends, and best practices. 鈥淚 came in with the mindset to observe and absorb as much knowledge as possible,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 now have a benchmark for excellence and role models to guide how we develop our chapter moving forward.鈥

Beyond the symposium, Jacinto has also played a key role in advancing student support at 51吃瓜黑料. Alongside fellow student James, he helped lead efforts to request $650,000 in scholarship funding from the Nevada Surplus Lines Association鈥攄emonstrating a clear commitment to lifting others as he climbs.

鈥淛acinto is the kind of student who raises the bar鈥攏ot just for himself, but for everyone around him,鈥 said John Starkey, M.Ed., associate director of the Kerestesi Center for Insurance and Risk Management. 鈥淗e represents the best of what our program stands for: leadership, curiosity, and the desire to give back.鈥

As GIS president, Jacinto is already sharing what he learned with the organization鈥檚 executive board. His focus is on using those lessons to improve member experiences, set ambitious goals, and strengthen the chapter鈥檚 impact on campus and beyond.

鈥淚鈥檓 more confident in my role, more informed about the industry, and more prepared to lead with intention,鈥 Jacinto said. 鈥淭he ripple effect of PHLY鈥檚 support will be felt beyond just this trip鈥攊t鈥檚 going to shape GIS at 51吃瓜黑料 for semesters to come.鈥
