Dear university community,

At approximately 11:15 p.m. Saturday, May 18, University Police received reports of a shooting in the parking structure of the University Gateway Building in the 4700 block of South Maryland Parkway, across the street from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's main campus. Police were already responding to a noise complaint in the area when the shooting occurred following an altercation between two groups of people.

This appears to have been an isolated incident and there was no threat to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.

The victim, who was not affiliated with 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and does not appear to have been involved in the altercation, was taken to a local hospital and released. Police said the suspect fled the area south and away from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's campus.

University Police issued a "shelter in place" alert for individuals who live in the YOU apartments in the University Gateway Building, which was lifted at approximately 1:15 a.m. Sunday. University Police continues to investigate.

Members of the university community who would like to can utilize mental health and counseling resources that are available.

There will be an enhanced visible presence by police in the area of the incident and on the main campus. The safety and well-being of every member of our university family continues to be of the utmost importance.
