  • 83% of the McNair Scholars who participated in the Summer Research Institute completed their research or scholarly activities

Grant Resources

The Department of Education awarded The Center (51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ) a total of 30 nationally competitive grants, which exceed $82.6 million. The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant is a seven-year grant for a total award of $45 million. Ten of the grants awarded are Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science programs, all of which are five-year grants for a total award of $15.7 million. Six Educational Talent Search programs are also awarded for five years and total $9 million. Two Educational Opportunity Centers are five-year grants with a total award of $2.7 million. Two Student Support Services programs are five-year awards, which total $2.8 million. Ronald E. McNair Scholars Institute is also a five-year grant with a total award of $1.4 million. The Center was awarded two TRIO Training programs—both two-year grants with a total award of $1.4 million. The Center has also been awarded two Title III Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI)—five-year grants which total $3 million. The Center was awarded one NSF Southern Nevada Northern Arizona Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (SNNA-LSAMP) grant with a total award of $130,000.

Community Partnerships

  • The Center’s long-standing position in the community, building and maintaining valuable partnerships and collaboration with other entities enables our organization to synergize resources and achieve greater student success.
  • The Nevada Department of Employment and Training, with the Department of Health and Human Services (a division of Welfare and Supportive Services), and The Center’s TRIO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) program developed a partnership aimed at encouraging low-income and first- generation welfare recipients to consider higher education as an option for a self-sustained lifestyle. Through this and other collaborative efforts, more than three hundred individuals received GED assessment and advising toward continuing their education during this year.
  • Wells Fargo First Generation Scholarship Program provides 30 scholarships annually ($2,500 each) to undergraduate students who meet eligibility criteria. Students must commit to 80 hours a year of volunteer service at one of The Center’s target schools.

Participants

  • Since receiving its first federal grant in 1967, CAEO has increased the number of participants from 50 students to more than 20,000 annually.
  • Since 2005, the Ronald E. McNair Scholars (TRIO) Institute reports 52 students have earned a doctoral degree and 97 students went to graduate school.
  • Hundreds of eligible participants, who are undergraduate students at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, have conducted research under the guidance of mentors from the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty, presented at research symposiums, and published their research findings. Some of the participants had the opportunity to present their research at national conferences.

    • Have an interest in STEM; and/or

    • Would likely be successful in STEM; or

    • tJuniors who are STEM majors and have a strong record of academic achievement
