About

Electrical engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to the design, manufacture, and control of structures, machines, processes, and systems. In the past, the work of electrical engineers has had a direct and vital impact on people’s lives. For example, electrical engineers have been responsible for the creation of electric power, modern electronics, computers, electronic communication systems, modern flight controllers, automated manufacturing and medical diagnostic tools. An electrical engineering education continues to provide opportunities for solving problems of great social significance and for increasing people’s quality of life. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ has excellent facilities for graduate education and research in electrical engineering. In addition, our faculty are experienced and knowledgeable in many of the electrical engineering disciplines, including communications, computer engineering, control system theory, electromagnetics and optics, electronics, power systems, signal processing and solid state devices. At 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, students have the opportunity for personal interaction so that programs and research projects can be tailored to student interests.

Learning Outcomes

Overall Electrical Engineering Graduate Program Objectives

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers graduate programs which culminate in M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering. These programs strive to provide a learning centered environment where accomplished faculty share their experience and knowledge with students so that graduates of the program can:

  1. Demonstrate a strong technical knowledge in their field so that they can lead and direct engineering and scientific industry teams in their chosen field of study.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to learn independently and generate new knowledge in their chosen field of study.
  3. Reach the highest academic level with the potential to become a leader and an authority in Electrical Engineering.

MS Non-Thesis Program (MS Course Only Option)

Objectives

The M.S. in Electrical Engineering non-thesis program strives to provide a learning centered environment where accomplished faculty share their experience and knowledge with students so that graduates of the program can:

  • Demonstrate a strong technical knowledge in their field so that they can lead and direct engineering and scientific industry teams in their chosen field of study.
Outcomes

Graduates of the program will demonstrate a strong technical knowledge in chosen electrical engineering field by passing a comprehensive exam in the student's major area of study near the completion of the degree program.

Assessment
  1. Comprehensive exam.
  2. Track graduates career shortly after graduation.

MS Program (Thesis Option)

Objectives

The M.S. in Electrical Engineering thesis program strives to provide a learning centered environment where accomplished faculty share their experience and knowledge with students so that graduates of the program can:

  • Demonstrate a strong technical knowledge in their field so that they can lead and direct engineering and scientific industry teams in their chosen field of study.
  • Demonstrate the ability to learn independently.
Outcomes

Graduates of the program will:

  • Demonstrate a strong technical knowledge in electrical engineering field by successfully completing course work and integrating knowledge learned in their course work into a thesis.
  • Demonstrate the ability to learn independently by completing a creative or research project and reporting on this activity in a thesis which should include:
    • A hypothesis (or hypotheses).
    • A set of objectives and goals.
    • A critical literature review.
    • A theoretical, experimental and/or modeling study.
    • A conclusion.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate technical information both orally and in writing at an acceptable level of proficiency.
Assessment
  1. M.S. thesis.
  2. Thesis defense (oral exam).
  3. Track graduates career shortly after graduation.

Career Possibilities

A Master of Science (M.S.) degree in electrical engineering specifically prepares graduates for a career in the electrical engineering field. Most students who purse an M.S. in electrical engineering have a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in electrical engineering. Obtaining an M.S. degree in electrical engineering allows graduates to specialize in particular electrical engineering disciplines and can help further graduates’ careers past introductory level work. A Master of Science degree in electrical engineering can also help graduates find work in other careers such as patent law and marketing and management in engineering companies.
