First generation college students face unique challenges when they decide to pursue academic degrees at a college or university because they are the first ones in their immediate family to do so. Having no frame of reference for what to expect from the university experience, and no one readily available to explain how different it is from high school can be intimidating. Many first generation students are not aware of the many support services available to college students, and they may be too shy to ask for help.
The Intersection strives to fill in these gaps for students by helping them access information and resources to ease their transition into higher education. We help you:
- Enhance knowledge about academic requirements and professional goals
- Connect with first generation faculty members
- Pair with peer mentors who may have similar interests and experiences
- Build college readiness skills
- Locate and use campus and community services
- Identify financial resources
- Foster leadership development opportunities
- Encourage candid conversations with family members
- Attend academic workshops, receive financial coaching, and provide advocacy
- Participate in national first generation recognition activities
