Graduate Teaching Certification
The Graduate Teaching Certification (GTC) is a year-long professional development program that provides graduate and professional students with the skills and knowledge necessary to teach successfully in a post-secondary classroom. Students will experience intellectual discussion of effective teaching strategies and gain insight on best teaching practices by completing a graduate seminar on college teaching, attending workshops, completing the teaching and evaluation experience, and more. The GTC is a collaborative effort between the Graduate College, Office of the Executive Vice Provost and Provost, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Office of Online Education, GPSA, and a number of departments that offer teaching support.
This is a medallion-qualifying program for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ graduate & professional students. For additional information, please see the Graduate College Medallion Program website.
To be eligible to participate in this program, graduate students must:
- be currently enrolled and in good academic standing in their graduate or professional degree program.
- maintain a minimum 3.5 overall GPA.
- be interested in developing and enhancing skills to teach in post-secondary settings.
Applications are only accepted once per year. Applications will be open from July 1 to September 15. There is no application fee.
The 2024-2025 Online Graduate Teaching Certification Application can be found on . Please log in to the Grad Rebel Gateway, click on The Grad Academy tab, then click on the TGA Applications button to Submit a New Application.
As a part of the application form, please be prepared to provide a statement of interest that details your experience and goals for participating in the Graduate Teaching Certification program.
All program requirements need to be completed in full by the student in order to complete the program, receive a certificate of completion, and have the GTC completion noted on their 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ transcript.
- Program requirements will be submitted through the Graduate Teaching Certification WebCampus Course. Participants will be added to the course after program acceptance.
- Students must attend all cohort meetings, which include: (1) an Introductory Cohort Meeting in August; (2) a Mid Cohort Meeting at the end of the Fall semester; (3) and, a Final Cohort Meeting at the end of the academic year. Please note that students will be put on program probation after one cohort meeting absence and the second absence may lead to program separation.
- Students must enroll in EDH 780 Seminar: Teaching in Higher Education (or an equivalent, approved class: normal tuition and fees apply). In order to determine if a class is approved for the GTC, please email a copy of the syllabus to gradacademy@unlv.edu.
- Students must complete the Teaching Observation Assignment. The Graduate Teaching Certification program's Teaching Observation Assignment is designed to help participants engage in professional learning to improve their teaching and enhance students' learning through this reflective practice. Assignment guidelines and deadlines will be detailed in the program’s WebCampus Course.
- Students must watch 1 mandatory workshop and submit a one-page summary. The mandatory workshop will be provided via WebCampus.
- Students must attend a minimum of 2 elective workshops scheduled in the fall and/or spring terms. Workshop options will be listed below under this year’s workshop schedule. Alternatively, students can select recorded workshops from the Workshop Summary Options tab and submit one page summaries via WebCampus.
- Finally, participants must submit their teaching portfolios at the end of the spring semester. Participants will receive feedback on portfolio submissions from a faculty member.
- Complete all program assessments (surveys/feedback forms)
- Students must apply and be admitted before they can begin participating in the GTC.
- Once admitted, students must complete all program requirements in one academic year with their cohort.
- All cohort meetings are mandatory.
- If a student is not in good standing in their degree program, or if they create any problems as a participant in the GTC, they may be removed from the program at the discretion of the graduate college dean
Cohort meetings are mandatory unless a documented excuse has been approved.

- Introductory Cohort Meeting: Tuesday, September 24, 2024, 3:30-5 p.m.
- Mid Cohort Meeting: Monday, November 18, 2024, 3:30-5 p.m.
- Final Cohort Meeting: Monday, April 28, 2025, 3:30-5:00 p.m.
- The Grad Academy ​Mixer: ​Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 5-6:30 p.m., University Gateway Building, Room 268 & 269 (optional)
- The Grad Academy End of Year Celebration: Thursday, May 15, 2025 from 5:00-6:30 p.m., University Gateway Building, Room 268 & 269 (optional)
