Description

Introduction to the history of international film, its structure and terminology. Development of cinematic techniques from Edison, Lumiere, and Melies to prevailing contemporary trends surveyed, with special emphasis on major directors such as Eisenstein, Ford, Griffith, Lang, Hitchcock, Bergman, and Renoir.

Textbook is FILM HISTORY: AN INTRODUCTION, 5th edition. $170 to purchase new hardcover copy; rentals, used, and electronic editions available at lower cost. Most films are provided, though students may small rental fees to access some films (max cost = $50).
