The Brookings Mountain West think tank at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ is a center for high-quality, independent research on the public policy issues critical to the Inter-Mountain West region.
2: The Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center is a model for active academic intervention, tutoring, and student support. The retention rate for those using the center's services is 88 percent.
3: Transfer Center Partnership
51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ recently established a transfer center partnership with the College of Southern Nevada to make the transition from community college to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ easier.
4: Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance & Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce
51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ President Neal Smatresk helped form and currently serves on the executive committee of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance and on the executive committee of the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce.
5: $212 Million in Financial Aid
Scholarship and financial aid support has increased. In 2011-12, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ distributed more than $212 million in financial aid and accounted for 44 percent of total aid disbursed by state higher education institutions.
6: Comprehensive Accreditation Report
The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities' comprehensive cited 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ "for its exceptional sense of community and solidarity in the face of literally unprecedented fiscal challenges that were countered by a commitment to transparency and inclusiveness in critical planning by the administration and (Faculty) Senate."
7: The Office of Economic Development & Technology Transfer
The office of economic development and technology transfer was established in March 2012. Representatives of the office have initiated aggressive outreach efforts to partner with both state and local economic development agencies, including the Governor's office on economic development and the Nevada Development Authority.
8: Development of Minor Programs
51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ has developed a series of minors directed to critical needs of our state, including the global entrepreneurship program for future business leaders and a renewable energy minor that provides a foundation in both technical and policy issues.
9: One of the Largest Fundraising Years in 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ History
In 2011-12, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ raised more than $59.9 million in contributions and gift commitments, including $38.5 million in cash and cash equivalents, and $13.2 million in pledges. This was one of the largest fundraising years in the university's history.
10: The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business Startup Center
The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business Startup Center was created by reorganizing the former Small Business Development Center and refocusing its mission on technology companies and entrepreneurial start ups. The center is aligning its efforts with the governor's office of economic development to focus on the areas with the most potential for economic impact and job creation.
