KUNV Radio鈥檚 student DJs assembled the mix of hip hop, indie, classic rock, and pop to capture the mood of campus, impart some wisdom to fellow Rebels, or honor our history. Of course, The Killers鈥 鈥淢r. Brightside鈥 is a nod to 51吃瓜黑料 alumnus Ronnie Vannucci, who used to sneak his band into Ham Fine Arts for practice before they achieved international success.
DJ Monserrath Hernandez chose Blink 182鈥檚 鈥淕oing Away to College,鈥 to send a message to incoming students. It鈥檚 a 1999 song about a boyfriend writing to his girlfriend at the end of high school. 鈥淚 thought it was a really good way to start off the semester. It鈥檚 my last year here so the song is bittersweet,鈥 said Hernandez, a journalism major who manages KUNV鈥檚 station and hosts the show 鈥淟os Punks.鈥
She rounded out the playlist with the last song, 鈥淪weet Child O鈥 Mine鈥 by Guns N鈥 Roses because she hopes students know 鈥渆verything will be OK鈥 whenever they face challenges.
Isaiah Thomas, a junior journalism major, selected 鈥淟oyalty鈥 by Kendrick Lamar featuring Rihanna. Thomas is the host of 鈥淩ebel Rebound鈥 on The Rebel-HD2 and appreciates Lamar鈥檚 talent to tell stories through his lyrics and calls him the 鈥渂est in the game.鈥
鈥淚 close my eyes and I can feel the bass of the music,鈥 Thomas said. He also chose Queen鈥檚 鈥淏ohemian Rhapsody鈥 for anyone commuting to campus. (Write鈥檚 note: please exercise safe driving measures if deciding to embark on carpool karaoke to 鈥淏ohemian Rhapsody鈥 or anything by Queen 鈥 just saying).
Laurents Banuelos-Benite, a graduate student in journalism, picked New Found Glory鈥檚 鈥淢y Friends Over You,鈥 from the album 鈥淪ticks and Stones.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 one of my favorite songs, favorite bands. It鈥檚 my go-to- album for a lot of things,鈥 Banuelos-Benite said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about sticking with people who came up with you, who have been there to support you.鈥
The student DJs also asked Greenspun College of Urban Affairs Dean Robert. R. Ulmer to select a song. Bruce Springsteen鈥檚 鈥淭hunder Road,鈥 he said, 鈥渋s about setting out on a new course in life and the opportunities, and the uncertainties that come with it.鈥 In other words, it鈥檚 about making your way as a Rebel.
