Match Day for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine’s class of 2024 was a big success. It was the day that 61 members of the class of 2024 were allowed to open their custom boxes and discover where they will be completing their residencies.
This year, 57% of the class of 2024 are remaining in Nevada for at least their first year of graduate medical education (GME). The school is making steady progress on its mission to serve as a transformational force for improving health care in Nevada.
Did you know 77% of physicians who complete their undergraduate (MD degree program) and graduate (residency/fellowship) medical education in Nevada actively practice in Nevada? Although Nevada may rank 45th in the nation for active physicians per 100,000 population, we are 6th in the nation for active physicians retained from an in-state GME program; therefore, the 2024 Match Day results are great news for the state.
In addition to the successful matches for the class of 2024, the school is celebrating the newly minted physicians who will continue their medical training in one of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine GME programs — training with our faculty physicians, inside our partner hospitals.
The school will welcome 87 residents who matched with 51ԹϺ residency programs on Match Day — including 27 from Nevada.
This annual event kicked off with a short performance by the “Sackbut Quartet,” followed by remarks from Ann Diggins, assistant dean for student affairs; Dr. Marc J. Kahn, dean and vice president for health affairs; Keith E. Whitfield, 51ԹϺ president; Dr. Robert Hernandez, associate dean for academic affairs and education; and Michael Patros, class of 2024 president.
