Nirmala Lekhak
Biography
Nirmala Lekhak is an assistant professor of nursing at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ specializing in older adult health, particularly focusing on spirituality and compassion.
Lekhak’s primary research examines the role of contemplative practices in enhancing cognitive function, memory, and psychological health (particularly loneliness, depression, and anxiety) in later life. Her work strives to improve mental well-being of both aging populations and their family caregivers by designing interventions, such as meditation, and pursuit of activities that foster compassionate love and kindness.
She has also explored methods to manage anxiety, loneliness, and other emotions associated with the coronavirus pandemic and chronic illness. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed nursing and interdisciplinary journals, including Nursing Outlook, the Journal of Gerontological Nursing, and the Journal of Holistic Nursing.
Lekhak is a member of the Gerontological Society of America, among other professional organizations. In 2021, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Ambrose University College of Health and Human Services for her outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community service.
