Trombonists from across the U.S. will gather on the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Ham Hall Concert stage at 2 p.m. Nov. 3 for the 18th annual "76 Trombones +4 Concert."
This year's guest artists are Los Angeles jazz great Bob McChesney, ballad specialist Art Sares, trombone choir specialist and new music soloist Don Lucas, and 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ alumnus Richard Lopez. The massed trombone choir of more than 100 will treat the audience to an afternoon of light classics and jazz standards. All proceeds will support the Abe Nole Music Scholarship Fund at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. Advanced sale general admission tickets to the concert are $10 for students and $7 for seniors and military. Tickets are now on sale at the Performing Arts Center Box Office.
Bob McChesney has performed in movies, television, commercial jingles and recordings in Los Angeles for many years. His recent activities include recordings with Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, and Barry Manilow, among others. He was a featured soloist at the 2001 International Trombone Association conference in Nashville, Tenn.
Art Sares was a 'first call' trombonist in Chicago for many years before moving to Florida. He has been featured on more than 1800 recordings. His 'Tommy Dorsey Medley' has been a big hit at past 76 Trombones concerts.
Don Lucas has taken his trombone choir to England and been featured as a soloist on concert tours in Europe and Russia. He will perform a piece written specifically for the November 3 concert, which will conclude with the Bill Rogers arrangement of "76 Trombones."
The Abe Nole Scholarship Fund was established in memory of one of Las Vegas' most beloved musicians. Nole arranged and wrote for his 'Bonehead' band in the 60s and the 70s, which involved many of the trombonists in Las Vegas. When he passed away in 1985, several local trombonists decided to organize a mass trombone concert in his honor. Eighty professional trombonists from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco appeared in the first concert. Participation has grown through the years to include trombonists from all over the country and as far away as Japan.
Proceeds from the 76 Trombones +4 Concert go to the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Abe Nole Scholarship Fund to assist trombone music majors. The first Abe Nole scholar enrolled in the fall of 1990 and, to date, more than 20 scholarships have been awarded.
