Associate professor of geoscience Rodney Metcalf has received the March 1998 Alumni Faculty Award for Academic Excellence and Student Focus.
The recently established award is also given out in February, April, September, October, and November.
Metcalf, a 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty member since 1991, has written numerous journal articles and published abstracts. He is the recipient of several research grants, including one from the National Science Foundation and one from the U.S. Navy Geothermal Project. He is also a two-time recipient of the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty development research grant.
He teaches a wide variety of classes in geoscience, including geology, geologic catastrophes, optical mineralogy, and petrology, and he supervises the research of both undergraduate and graduate students. He also serves as a proposal reviewer for the National Science Foundation and as a reviewer for the "Journal of Geophysical Research."
Metcalf is a member of several professional organizations, including the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, and the Geological Society of Nevada.
He was honored recently at this year's alumni scholarship luncheon.
