51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ President Carol C. Harter has appointed history professor Joseph A. "Andy" Fry to serve as her executive assistant.
A member of the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty since 1975, Fry has served in a variety of campus administrative posts, including chair of the history department, chair of the Faculty Senate, and associate dean of the College of Arts and Letters.
"Dr. Fry is both an outstanding teacher and a respected scholar who has given much to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ," Harter said. "He will be an asset to this administration."
She added that his duties as her executive assistant will include liaison work for the president's office on academic and faculty issues.
Fry holds a doctorate and master's degree from the University of Virginia. Before joining the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty, he was an instructor at the Virginia Polytechnic and State University.
The author of two books and more than 40 articles and book reviews, Fry has received awards of excellence in both teaching and scholarship from the College of Liberal Arts. His teaching and research have focused on the study of United States foreign policy, the Gilded Age, the U.S. South, and U.S. involvement in Vietnam. He has taught 13 different courses throughout his tenure at the university.
He is also credited with participation on a wide range of committees and boards serving his department, college, university, community, and academic discipline.
