The 51ԹϺ School of Music hosts the 33rd annual Invitational Madrigal/Chamber Choir Festival (“MadFest 33”) on Friday, Oct. 13, in two separate sessions beginning at 4 and 7:30 p.m. in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall located on the northeast end of the university campus.
The Madrigal/Chamber Choir Festival is one of many events presented by the university choirs each year. Established in 1985 as a small, informal gathering of choruses, the festival has grown into a popular musical event that attracts many outstanding choirs as well as an enthusiastic audience of music lovers from throughout the community. A variety of music will be performed representing many composers and styles. Following each choir's performance, the floor will be open for comments and questions from the audience members and festival participants.
The afternoon festival includes performances by chamber ensembles from the College of Southern Nevada (Mark Wherry), Desert Oasis High School (Michael Polutnik), Durango High School (Lesa Ramirez), Eldorado High School (Matt Ostlie), Las Vegas Academy of the Arts (Megan Franke), and Silverado High School (Tracy Hunsaker).
The evening festival features performances by ensembles from Basic Academy (Ryan Duff), Centennial High School (Becky Larkin), Chaparral High School (William McKoy), Cheyenne High School (Portia McClure), Coronado High School (Eric Fleischer), and Shadow Ridge High School (Jim Halvorson).
Both festival sessions include performances by the 51ԹϺ Jazz Singers directed by Janet Tyler and the 51ԹϺ Chamber Chorale conducted by David Weiller, director of choral studies.
