"Fly on the Wall," a television show by and for Southern Nevada high school students, will debut April 5 on 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ-TV, cable Channel 4.
The show, which will feature students from the Advanced Technologies Academy asking questions of and interacting with experts on a variety of subjects, will be produced by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's office of distance education in conjunction with the university's Hank Greenspun School of Communication, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ-TV, and the academy.
Six of the 30-minute shows will be produced this spring. If the show is successful, more will be produced in the fall.
The first show, which will feature 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ political science professor Dina Titus and Robert Schmidt, an instructor in 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's sociology department, talking about population issues, will air at 6:30 p.m. April 5 on 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ-TV, which is broadcast. It will be rebroadcast at 9 p.m. that same day and again at 7 p.m. on April 9.
Future topics are expected to include environmental issues, juvenile crime, welfare and managed health care, terrorism and war, and technology.
Advanced Technologies Academy students Miriam Warren and Misty Pellegrino will host the show, along with social studies teacher Thomas Stanley.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for us at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ to interact with high school students from the Clark County School District in a positive, intellectually stimulating way," said Charlotte Farr, director of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's office of distance education and executive producer of the show.
The idea for the program grew out of a successful series of forums in which students met with and asked questions of experts, Farr said.
Paul Traudt, coordinator of telecommunications for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's Greenspun School of Communication and co-executive producer of the show, said,
"The show provides new, quality programming for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ-TV 4, which transcends age and experience by bringing together subject matter experts and high school students."
Stanley of Advanced Technologies Academy, said, "The show is designed to give students the opportunity to interact with experts on issues that the students have chosen."
