The Barrick Lecture Series presents nationally and internationally renowned speakers through a generous grant from philanthropist Marjorie Barrick.
Ryan Coogler’s impressive body of work began when he was a college freshman creating short films with his football teammates and friends. After graduating from California State University, Sacramento with a degree in finance, he went on to pursue his master of fine arts at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
It was there that he created his award-winning shorts Locks, Fig, and Gap. Locks was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival and won the Dana and Albert Broccoli Award for Filmmaking Excellence. Gap received the Jack Nicholson Award for Achievement in Directing, and Fig won the HBO Short Filmmaking Award, DGA Student Filmmaker Award, and was nominated for the Black Reel Award for outstanding independent short film.
After receiving his master of fine arts, he soon made his first feature film Fruitvale Station starring Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan, which debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The film won both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for dramatic film and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film, two of the festival’s top honors.
Following its success at Sundance, Fruitvale Station competed at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival and won the Cannes Prix L'avenir Award in Un Certain Regard.
Shortly thereafter, Coogler wrote and directed Creed starring Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. His most recent film, Black Panther, won three Oscars and was nominated for six, including Best Picture.
Tickets
The lecture is free and open to the public but tickets are required. Tickets are limited to two per person and can be obtained from the Performing Arts Center box office.
Tickets are available for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ students, faculty, and staff beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 30. Tickets for the general public will be available starting at 10 a.m. Nov. 2.
