The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents (BoR) today approved an update of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's campus master plan.
The campus master plan frames long-term growth and development of the university including academic, research and support facilities, and plans for housing, parking, and other amenities. The BoR requires master plan updates approximately every 10 years; the last 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ comprehensive master plan update occurred in 2004.
"The campus master plan guides all future physical development at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, to support both our institutional vision and mission with the most effective use of our campus resources," said David Frommer, executive director of planning and construction. "The fundamental principle guiding the planning process continues to be the development of a first-class environment that supports student success and faculty scholarship, while also embracing our strong connection to our community."
Meetings with the university community, surrounding property owners, business and tenants, public agencies and private university partners guided the plan update. This is important since all future development on the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ campus must be consistent with the BoR-approved campus master plan.
Since the last plan update, the university has modified its Midtown 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ vision and is in the early development stages of a multi-modal transit center in cooperation with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ is also in planning stages for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏNow, a proposed public/private partnership with developer Majestic Realty Co. that would include a mega-events center and student village on the northwest part of campus.
Additional plan highlights include:
- Integration and expansion of housing opportunities on or adjacent to the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ campus to create a more residential campus experience
- Expansion of parking availability to include 11,000 - 13,000 additional spaces for campus use and as support for a proposed mega-events center
- Strategic development of the academic core, including space for future campus capital projects, including a new Hotel College academic building, facilities for nursing and physical therapy on the Shadow Lane campus, the replacement of Grant Hall, and a new undergraduate instructional lab building
Campus development guided by the last plan update includes facilities such as the Student Union, Science & Engineering Building, Student Recreation and Wellness Center, the Mendenhall Center and Greenspun Hall.
