What
Students from the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering will compete for cash prizes at the Spring 2019 51ԹϺ Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition. Students from all areas of engineering choose, design, and build a commercially viable product that is judged by a panel of industry experts. The competition marks a pinnacle moment in an engineering student’s academic career as they are challenged to hone their engineering expertise and foster skills in business and entrepreneurship as they create a real-world solution to an engineering problem
The Senior Design Competition showcases the wealth of knowledge, expertise, and professional ingenuity of the College’s engineering students. This year, 39 teams will present engineering solutions in various topics including construction, safety, health/fitness, and entertainment.

Details
A capstone to every engineering student’s educational experience at 51ԹϺ, the Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition challenges students to create innovative solutions to real-world problems. Just a few of the 39 projects scheduled to be on display include:
Haptic Vibes Test
The Haptic Vibes Test is a wearable device that enhances entertainment experiences for the hearing impaired. This innovative product allows users to “feel” the music of a concert, performance, or live entertainment event.
Hempcrete Insulating Walls
Current materials used in construction, such as drywall and insulation, produce excessive amounts of carbon dioxide during the manufacturing process. Hempcrete Insulating Walls uses hemp, a sustainable, fast-growing material that takes little energy to produce. Additionally, hemp does not emit much carbon dioxide and absorbs the surrounding environment, making hempcrete a carbon negative material. Hemcrete is also water, mold, and fire resistant.
Gym Space
Establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a challenge many people face. Those striving for a healthy lifestyle should be able to easily connect and share with like-minded people. GymSpace is an app in which users can join groups and/or events based on their common goals and interests. Linking diet and fitness, GymSpace works as a social network where users can create and share custom workout routines.
Emotion Detection Device (E.D.D.)
Businesses have relied on consumer feedback through social media and surveys. Collecting information leads to a loss of true qualitative data regarding customer experience. The Emotion Detecting Device provides clients with an easy out-of-the-box solution for integrating emotion-recognition artificial intelligence (A.I.) with their own products and services.
Banana Ripening Box
The flavor intensity of fruit often depends on its ripeness. While there are products that on the market that absorb ethylene, like bags and absorption packets, they simply extend the shelf life of the fruit. The Banana Ripening Box controls the ripening time of fruit by using an ethylene gas and ethephon mixture. This ensures that that the shelf life is extended and peak ripeness when desired. The device can be implemented in restaurants and households to reduce the spoilage of fruit.
