Hundreds of local college educators, researchers, administrators and students, as well as community leaders and advocates, will gather at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ for a day of discussion on equity, diversity, and inclusion during the annual Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Southern Nevada Diversity Summit.

NSHE organizes diversity summits each year in Northern and Southern Nevada as a way to promote inclusive policies and practices across its member institutions. 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Office of Diversity Initiatives is the host of the 2019 Southern Nevada event.
Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, author, humanitarian, and oldest daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz, will deliver the summit keynote. Dr. Barbee Oakes, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s chief diversity officer, will moderate a panel discussion with area college presidents on free speech and advocacy in higher education. A will be available for the summit keynote and presidents panel.
Afternoon breakout sessions will cover topics geared toward faculty, staff and students, including institutional equity, intercultural education, and college access and success for students from diverse identity groups.
Southern Nevada Diversity Summit schedule:
- 8 to 8:45 a.m. – registration/check-in
- 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. – welcome and introductions
- 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. – keynote by author and diplomat, Ambassador Attallah Shabazz
- 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. – NSHE presidents panel
- 12 to 1:15 p.m. – lunch
- 1:30 to 4 p.m. – breakout sessions for faculty, students, and administrators
- 4:15 p.m. – closing remarks
