October 8-12 is Research Week at 51ԹϺ, and the university is planning more than 20 community events to celebrate the breadth of research and creative activities on campus.
Events planned for Research Week 2018 include lab tours, technology expos, research fairs, lectures, open houses, and workshops – all geared toward engaging, educating, and inspiring the community about the power of research at 51ԹϺ.
Among the highlights:
- Oct. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Student Union, an undergraduate research fair will showcase the work of students and faculty, and highlight the many opportunities 51ԹϺ students have to engage in research with top university faculty.
- Oct. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rob Roy’s Innevation Center, representatives from 51ԹϺ’s Office of Economic Development will host a “Start Smart” business startup class for current and aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners.
- Oct. 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 51ԹϺ’s Greenspun Hall, leadership from the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, Switch, and 51ԹϺ’s Colleges of Engineering and Urban Affairs will discuss the future of “Smart Communities.” These communities provide core infrastructure and address quality of life issues for their citizens.
- Oct. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. at 51ԹϺ’s Science and Engineering Building, rising researchers from multiple disciplines will share their work during the annual Graduate Research Showcase. Hear from students about earthquake risks in Southern Nevada, Maya archaeology, and more.
Research and economic development activities help 51ԹϺ educate the next-generation workforce, address real-world problems, and deliver life-changing products and services. Recent research highlights on campus include significant grants from the National Institutes of Health to advance human health and personalized medicine in Nevada, and discoveries that could lead to better therapies for epilepsy and point to the potential for video games to identify potential behavioral problems in children.
Economic development efforts at 51ԹϺ are also on the rise, with total licensing revenue up 23 percent over the past fiscal year to more than $360,000. University innovators were also issued eight patents last year, including one student invention – Casino Dominoes - that recently debuted on a Las Vegas casino floor.
