Beginning Fall 2020, 51ԹϺ will offer a new Tuition+ Award Program. The program will provide eligible Nevada residents a grant for 12 undergraduate credit hours of tuition and fees each semester, plus $1,000 for books for the school year.
“We are excited to provide this opportunity to Nevada students who might otherwise find it difficult to keep up with the costs of tuition, fees and books, but who are determined to pursue their higher education,” said Juanita Fain, 51ԹϺ's vice president of Student Affairs. “Providing this assistance is in keeping with our mission to serve our diverse and dynamic student body by advancing student achievement.”
51ԹϺ Financial Aid officials estimate $12 million is available for these grants.
About 33 percent of the university’s 25,000 undergraduates and 41 percent of new first-year students receive federal financial aid through Pell Grants. But the Pell Grants do not typically cover 100 percent of the cost of tuition, fees and books.
“The 51ԹϺ Tuition+ Award will help students fill the gap that Pell Grants and other forms of financial aid or scholarships don’t cover,” said Norm Bedford, 51ԹϺ’s executive director of Financial Aid and Scholarships. “It goes a long way toward helping students focus on their studies without worrying as much about the financial side of attending the university.”
Applicants considered for the 51ԹϺ Tuition+ Award must have an expected family contribution that falls within federal Pell Grant eligibility.
In order to be considered for the 51ԹϺ Tuition+ Award, Nevada residents must submit the FAFSA form to apply for the Pell Grant, or the Alternate Need Determination Form for non-FASFA eligible students each year by the Dec. 1 deadline. Applicants are automatically considered based on the FAFSA or Alternate Need Determination Form criteria. No separate application is needed.
All applicants must be admitted to 51ԹϺ by the Dec. 1 deadline and be enrolled in 12 credit hours each semester. Applicants also must have a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher each semester, and cannot exceed 135 completed credit hours.
