The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ School of Music presents Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (1689) with Jake Heggie's At the Statue of Venus (2005) at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 -16 in the Rando-Grillot Recital Hall of the Beam Music Center. Purcell’s familiar Baroque opera features 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Opera's collaboration with the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Graduate String Quartet.
Inspired by Virgil’s Aeneid, Dido follows the demise of the brokenhearted Queen of Carthage during ancient Roman times. The Purcell is paired with Jake Heggie’s At the Statue of Venus, a soprano monodrama in which a woman named Rose awaits her blind date in an art museum. Rose plans to meet him at the statue of the Roman goddess Venus, which ties the Purcell and Heggie works together with their Roman and romantic themes.
Hunter Rose Turner and Tamsyn Scott alternate as Dido with Matthew Erhart as Aeneas. Sarah Kim and Kristina Tullgren sing Rose. Directed by Linda Lister and conducted by Darryl Cooper.
