51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ biology professor Penny Amy has been selected to serve as interim dean of the university's Graduate College, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ President Carol C. Harter announced Wednesday (Jan. 7.)
Amy, who has taught at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ since 1985, began her new job Jan. 5. The Graduate College administers all of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's doctoral and master's degree programs.
"Penny proved her administrative abilities when serving as chair of the biological sciences department. We believe she will be an asset to the Graduate College," Harter said.
Provost Douglas P. Ferraro concurred, saying, "We know Penny will be able to provide the Graduate College with the type of leadership it needs as we increase the graduate intensity of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ."
Amy has received many awards over the years. Among them are being selected as a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and as the 1992 Barrick Scholar and Outstanding Researcher at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. She also has received awards from the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada for both her teaching and research.
She earned a doctoral degree in microbiology from Oregon State University and both a master's and a bachelor's degree in biology from Portland State University.
