Sandra Odell, a 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ curriculum and instruction professor, has been selected as the 1999 recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Educator Award, which is presented by the Association of Teacher Educators and Wadsworth Publishing.
Odell, who joined 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ in 1996, has authored or co-authored more than 30 book chapters and journal articles on the subject of educating teachers. She has presented or co-presented more than 60 papers on a wide variety of topics, including the Urban Teaching Partnership program in Las Vegas, teacher mentoring and induction, and collaboration between schools and universities. She has also made nearly 40 invited presentations.
A 1993 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the Association of Teacher Educators, Odell currently serves on several ATE committees and has served as a reviewer for the professional journals Teaching and Teacher Education, Journal of Teacher Education, and Action in Teacher Education. She currently chairs the ATE National Commission on Mentoring.
She is a member of several organizations, including the American Association for the Education of Young Children, the American Educational Research Association, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
She formerly held both teaching and administrative positions at Western Michigan University and the University of New Mexico in the field of education.
Odell received her master's degree in elementary education and her doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of New Mexico.
The Distinguished Teacher Educator Award will be presented Feb. 16 at the ATE Awards Ceremony in Chicago. Along with the award, Odell will receive $500 from Wadsworth Publishing.
