Buick announced its annual Volunteer Spirit Awards recently, and they included five faculty, students, and alumni from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, including alumna Sandy Miller, Nevada's first lady.
The awards are given across the country each year in recognition of volunteer service on university campuses and in communities. Three students, one faculty member, and one alumna received this year's awards at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. They are:
Sandy Miller for her commitment to Nevada's children, including the implementation of the Baby Your Baby Program. A 1971 graduate of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, Miller has played an important role in the National Science Foundation State System Initiative, the UNR Education Advisory Board, and the TEACH (Talk to children, Encourage children, Answer children's questions, Care about children, and Help children) program.
Dr. James Frey, professor of sociology and a faculty member since 1974. He has been active in his community, Henderson and Green Valley, and in Community Lutheran Church. He has also coached youth teams in soccer, basketball, and baseball; has worked with United Way of Southern Nevada and the Optimist Club of Casino Center.
Andrea Pulgarin, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. She received awards for having the highest grade point average as a freshman and sophomore in the Minority Engineering Program. She belongs to a number of campus organizations, including the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, and the Latino Enrichment Program.
Steven Eisen, a senior majoring in management in the College of Business and Economics. His volunteer work includes fund raising for the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, and the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas. He has also volunteered his time to the Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Family Service Agency.
Jennifer Brozovich, a senior majoring in communication studies in the Greenspun School of Communication. She has served the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ campus as student ambassador and student orientation leader. Her volunteer activities include work with the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Reach Out, Classroom on Wheels, and First Interstate Bank's Community Reinvestment Act Program.
