Alabama’s medical community is working to find solutions to the state’s growing workforce shortage. “The real problem comes down to access to care,” said Dr. Marc J. Kahn, dean of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “It takes too long to see a doctor. It takes too long to see a specialist. It takes to long to see a primary care provider.”

Many families in the northeast Las Vegas valley are often faced with barriers, one of which is pediatric health care. “We were able to see that the community was in need,” Pamela Girgis, a pediatric nurse practitioner with 51ԹϺ said. “80% or more of the kids we see are uninsured.”

Students at three east valley schools now have access to free healthcare services on-site at William H. Bailey Middle School. The Bailey Clinic is one of two clinics serving Clark County kids as part of a two-year pilot program through the 51ԹϺ School of Medicine.
