Biography

Dr. Alena Grewal is Assistant Professor-in-Residence and she joined the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ School of Nursing (SON) in 2017. Dr. Grewal brings expertise in both nursing education and advanced clinical practice to her roles at the SON.

Expertise

Dr. Grewal’s passion is functional medicine which allows her to use a patient-centered approach focused on preventing and reversing illnesses. Her education through the Institute of Functional Medicine equips her with the skills to examine epigenetic influences, including genetics, lifestyle/nutritional modifications, and environmental factors which are often overlooked in the conventional healthcare model.

Classes Taught

Dr. Grewal has taught the Nursing Care of the Adult Medical-Surgical Patient course in the undergraduate BSN program. As the Clinical Faculty Coordinator (CFC), she has been working with nursing students and nursing staff on our Dedicated Educational Unit (DEU). Additionally, Dr. Grewal teaches the FNP Children and OB in the graduate program.

Education Background

Dr. Grewal is a four-time 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ alumna. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing, master’s degree in nursing education, Post-Master’s Certificate in Advanced Practice FNP, and Doctor of Nursing Practice from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. She is a national board-certified FNP with experience in adult and pediatric urgent care and pediatric primary care.

Research or Scholarship

During her doctoral studies, Dr. Grewal focused on innovation in nursing education and student learning in clinical settings. She developed and piloted the AM/PM model which has been expanded to multiple courses in the undergraduate program.

Awards, recognitions, or group affiliations

Dr. Grewal received both the Outstanding MSN Nurse Educator Student Award and the Tony and Renee Marlon Award in 2017. She later earned the 2019 Outstanding Teaching by Part-Time Instructor Award, the 2020 A VITAL Affair Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, and the 2021 SON Appreciation Part-Time/CDI Award. Dr. Grewal is also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau honor society, the Western Institute of Nursing, and the National League for Nursing.
