Biography
Arthur Oliver Romero, MD, MSC, FCCP, is an associate professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine in the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. He is a graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. He attended the NIHES/Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands for his MSc in Medical Informatics. He then completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine and pulmonary critical care at UCSF Fresno. He is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and is board certified in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine.
His primary interest is taking care of patients with lung cancer, other thoracic malignancies and complex airway and pleural disease. He started the Screening for Pulmonary Oncologic Tumor Services (SPOTS) program and together with his team at University Medical Center provided expedited multidisciplinary care to patients with lung cancer. He also pioneered several technologies in Nevada, being the first pulmonologist to use electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy for biopsy of previously unreachable lung nodules as well as bronchial thermoplasty, a form of endoscopic treatment for severe asthma.
As much as he enjoyed taking care of patients and working with his trainees, he realized that the community still lacks the expertise in caring for a wide spectrum of lung complications related to lung cancer. With the support of the university, he elected to spend an additional year of fellowship training in Interventional Pulmonary Medicine at University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Romero’s goal is to start the very first interventional pulmonology program in Nevada and offer world class care to patients in Las Vegas. Dr. Romero will return to Las Vegas in July 2020.
During his interventional pulmonary medicine fellowship, Dr Romero is being trained in a variety of minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide breadth of lung problems. This includes bronchoscopic lung volume reduction using airway valves which was just recently approved by the FDA to help patients with severe COPD.
Outside work, Dr. Romero loves to travel and go camping with his wife and two kids. He was a boy scout growing up and is proud to be a Den Leader in his kids’ Cub Scout Pack.
