Biography
Dr. Cheryl A. Maes is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence with the School of Nursing. She joined 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ School of Nursing full-time in 2005 and teaches both in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Besides teaching, she has served in several leadership roles including, but not limited to, MSN Program Coordinator (2009-2012), and Faculty Senator (2017-2020).
Expertise
Dr. Maes is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and has been since 2000 with the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She has more than 29 years of nursing experience, 22 of which spent practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in primary care. Additional clinical background includes medical-surgical and public health nursing.
Classes Taught
Dr. Maes teaches across the curriculum in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Courses taught include, but are not limited to, Nursing Care of Older Adults, Advanced Health Assessment, Diagnostic Reasoning and Clinical Decision Making for the APRN, and FNP Adult and Women’s Health. Dr. Maes also serves as chair and member on doctoral advisory committees and is a faculty advisor for both BSN and MSN students.
Education Background
Dr. Maes earned her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (1992), master of science in nursing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (1999), and doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Arizona (2017). She is honored to be both a Rebel and Wildcat.
Research or Scholarship
Dr. Maes’ research interests include, but are not limited to, the physiological and psychological effects of stress on health, health promotion among vulnerable populations including older adults, reducing health disparities among vulnerable populations including older adults, sexual health, and use of alternative modalities to improve sexual function among older adults.
She also works closely with the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA) Education Committee. The goal of the GAPNA Education Committee is to participate in development of educational programs and information for the GAPNA website and other resources including, but are not limited to, gerontological resources for APRN preceptors and students, and reviewing abstracts for poster and oral presentations at GAPNA’s Annual Conference.
Awards, recognitions, or group affiliations
Dr. Maes serves the community as an RN member of the Nevada State Board of Nursing, as well as a member of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA) Education Committee. She is also a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Zeta Kappa Chapter), and the Western Regional Advanced Practice Nurses Association (WRAPNN). Dr. Maes was also inducted into the Empire Who’s Who Empowering Executives and Professionals Inc. 2004-2005 Registry.
