William Doyle, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor in Residence, English
Biography
Bill Doyle (Ph.D., University of Tennessee, Knoxville) is an associate professor in residence in the Honors College. He teaches first year seminar courses (HON 105), second year seminar courses (HON 110), writing composition (HON 100), and HON 400-level seminars on travel writing, nature writing, children’s literature, and contemporary food studies.
Doyle’s teaching and research interests include nature writing, travel writing, and food studies. This work has led him to explore the swamps of southwest Florida, consider the rhetorical and ethical impact of food documentaries like Food, Inc. and Fresh, and interview food bloggers about their approaches to social media and writing. Doyle is particularly interested in getting students out of the classroom to explore issues of place, space, and environment. In the past, this has meant visiting farms, food banks, restaurants, and groceries to explore various parts of the food system, but the approach also encourages students to consider the places where they live, work, learn, play, and ignore.
Doyle manages the Honors College planter as part of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Community Garden, inspiring students to participate and donate food to the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Food Bank. Since 2018, he has served on 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Community Engagement Council. Doyle is active with the National Collegiate Honors Council, presenting at annual conferences, coaching students who present, and judging posters. In recognition of his dedication as an educator and colleague, Doyle received the 2022 Honors College Service Award.
