Undergraduate Probation and Separation
University Probation
The university will place a student on probation if the 51ԹϺ GPA falls below a 2.00 (GPB - 0 or lower).
Continued Probation
Probation will be lifted as soon as the grade point balance rises to zero or above. Continued poor academic performance that leads to a grade point balance of -15 or below will result in university suspension. It is the responsibility of students on probation to seek advice from an academic advisor.
University Suspension
If the grade point balance of a student already warned by probation falls to -15 or below, the university will suspend the student for a minimum of one calendar year. A suspended student will not be allowed to take any 51ԹϺ credit courses. The university will suspend only at the end of a regular fall or spring semester in which the student has been on probation. University suspension automatically suspends the student from the program and college in which he or she is enrolled. An email sent to the student’s official 51ԹϺ (Rebel) email address will discharge all university responsibility for notification.
If the student has already begun courses in summer session I at the time that a suspension is processed the courses in summer session I may be completed for credit. Students will be dropped from summer session II and III courses. Credits earned in Summer Session I will not take a student off university suspension even if the grade point balance reaches above -15.
Graduate Probation and Separation
Academic Probation
Students are expected to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Any grade below a “B” will not qualify for graduate credit. A student who receives a B- or lower will be placed on academic probation. The SPH Committee will determine the criteria by which the student will be removed from academic probation on a case-by-case. Failure to fulfill the prescribed requirements will result in separation from the program. A student will be placed on academic probation if any of the following conditions apply:
- Any student who earns a cumulative GPA below 3.0 will be placed on academic probation. The student will have one semester to raise this average above 3.0 or be separated from the program.
- A student who receives one grade below a "B" (B- or lower) will be placed on probation. The SPH MPH Committee will determine the criteria by which the student will be removed from academic probation on a case-by-case basis. Failure to fulfill the prescribed requirements will result in separation from the program.
- Failure to make adequate progress towards degree requirements will also result in probation. This includes failure to complete 6 credits per academic year, failure to file appropriate forms with the Graduate College in a timely manner, failure to meet with their advisor upon request, or unsatisfactory grades including withdrawal or incomplete.
Separation
A student may be separated from the program for any of the following reasons:
- The student who receives two or more grades below a "B-" (C+ or lower) during their degree program will be separated from the program.
- The student receives a grade of "B-" or lower when repeating any core course. Core courses may only be repeated once.
- Any student receiving two non-consecutive semester GPAs below 3.0 will be separated from the program.
- Any student who fails the comprehensive examination, prospectus, or final thesis defense on the second try will be separated from the program.
- Plagiarism on any assignment, paper, prospectus, or thesis will not be tolerated and will result in the immediate separation of the student from the program. On cases involving plagiarism, the SPH MPH committee will be convened to evaluate the work in question and vote on whether the student should be separated from the MPH program.
