The role of the Black/African American Program Coordinator at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ is dedicated to serving the Afrodescendant student community. This individual is tasked with designing and implementing programs, conducting workshops, and offering resources aimed at affirming, educating, and empowering students. Additionally, the Coordinator actively addresses the specific needs of Afrodescendant students by engaging in collaborative advocacy, building coalitions, and transparently addressing the obstacles that hinder their personal, professional, and academic success.

Annual Black Carpet

The Black Carpet is a cherished campus tradition designed to celebrate and honor the contributions of Black students, staff, faculty, and community members. Initially established as a premier event during Black History Month, this annual gathering within the African Diaspora provides an opportunity for attendees to dance, dine, and rejoice in the Black community. The event features the presentation of prestigious awards:

  • Dr. Bert Babero Sr. Faculty/Staff Award (Honoring a Black staff or faculty member at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ)
  • The Black Print Award (Acknowledging a 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Black registered student organization)

Black History Month Trivia

Throughout Black History Month, SDSJ's social media platforms feature daily trivia questions to shed light on lesser-known facts about Black history. This initiative aims to engage a broader audience in learning about the historical contributions from those within the African Diaspora.

Juneteenth Celebration

Each year, SDSJ organizes a program to commemorate Juneteenth, recognizing the cultural significance of this day that marks the emancipation of those who were enslaved in the United States.

Marketing Campaigns Understanding that the Black experience at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ is diverse, the Black/African American Programs Team employs passive marketing campaigns. These campaigns include graphics and literature highlighting various topics central to the African Diaspora, such as Black womxn's empowerment, Black mental health, Black historical monuments, and Black hidden figures.

Black Students Matter

In collaboration with the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services, the Office of Student Diversity Programs provides a healing space for students within the African Diaspora through the Black Students Matter initiative. More information about dates and times for this initiative during the Spring 2021 semester will be released at a later time.
