About the Committee
The Committee on Campus Security and Safety (CCSS) reviews existing security measures and protocols and identifies and proposes new safety measures and physical systems. Their reviews and suggestions focus on our campus community and also consider local community resources and contacts. - Infrastructure improvements
- Alert systems, access controls, video detection systems for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Maryland, Medical District, and Harry Reid Research and Technology Park campuses.
- Training and protocols
- Training program development and requirements; responsibilities and protocols for supervisors, chairs, deans, and senior leadership.
- Safety-related communications
- Communication channels for building occupants, integrating 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ communications with the broader community, emergency alert messaging.

Updates
The committee provided the following interim report to President Whitfield in June 2024. The options for consideration are preliminary recommendations based upon the committee’s discussions, meetings with university specialists, and a variety of input from university meetings and feedback. The options are organized by subcommittee with overlapping considerations reflecting the need for interdependence of physical, policy, training, and responsibility initiatives.
In October 2024, the CCSS conducted a university-wide survey to learn about perceptions of safety on 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ campuses. The survey is not statistically significant, however, it provides insights into issues, concerns, and suggestions. Further analysis and correlations, especially due to the low student response rate, are necessary to gain a full understanding of the perceptions of safety and security within 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.
Over the coming months, the committee will continue to refine the options for consideration with the goal of providing a final report to President Whitfield at the beginning of 2025. As part of this process, the committee will seek feedback from the university community through focus groups and a survey. Information about these opportunities will be shared soon.
Simultaneously, university leaders are reviewing the interim report and researching feasibility and cost associated with the options for consideration.
