Program Overview

51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ students find that a specialty in French language and culture hones their language skills and prepares them for careers in business, the hotel industry, education, international studies, and science and technology.

French Minor

Requirements for a Minor in French Studies at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ consist of a minimum of 18 credits of FREN or WLC coursework. These may include FREN 213 and FREN 214. The 12 remaining credits are to be at the upper division (300-400) level, six of which must be in composition and conversation. Students earning minors must take at least one literature course.

French Major

Majoring in French Studies at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ ensures that a student not only graduates with a practical and fulfilling degree but also has links with more than 200 million people in 43 countries across 5 continents who speak French.

Master of Arts in French Studies

This program is currently on hiatus and will be reactivated at a later date.

Admission Requirements

Completion of language level FREN 114, or equivalent.

The French Language and International Business

  • France is one of the world’s largest economies.
  • France is the #1 destination for tourists. The number of people visiting France annually is greater than its population.
  • At least 3,000,000 Americans travel to French­ speaking destinations every year. French­ speaking European countries include Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Monaco.
  • France and the U.S. have long shared aerospace technology. French astronauts participate in U.S. space flights and the French Ariane rocket has launched American satellites. France has the world’s second largest aeronautics industry. All U.S. Coast Guard helicopters are made by Aerospatiale in Toulouse.
  • France plays a major international role in medicine and science. The greater Paris area has the highest concentration of mathematicians in the world. The Human Genome Project is located in Paris.

Study Abroad

Two 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ-sponsored study abroad programs in France are available to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ students. They are located in Pau, a city in the southwest, and in Lyon, a major city in the southeast. Offered by the University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), these programs provide courses to accommodate various majors and include visits to Paris and Toulouse. Students can choose between summer and semester schedules. Scholarships are available for participants.
