The Graduate College, Graduate & Professional Student Association, and graduate registered student organizations are participating in 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's 2023 First-Generation Celebration Week, taking place Nov. 6-10. 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's graduate students and faculty are invited to participate in the following:

"I Am the First" Photo Contest
First-generation graduate students and faculty are encouraged to submit one to three original images along with a response to the question, "What does it mean to be a first-generation student?" Prizes will be awarded to two winners in each of the following categories:

  • First Gen Spirit
  • Audience Favorite
  • Most Inspirational
  • Most Imaginative
  • First Gen Faculty/Staff
  • Luck of the Draw

The deadline to submit an entry is Nov. 1, and winners will be announced on Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m. during the First to Fly: Celebrating First Gens event (detailed below). .

To be a first-generation college student is to be a trendsetter. While the path through higher education presents new challenges and things to learn, it’s also a time to celebrate your accomplishment. You made it!

Join the Graduate College and the Graduate & Professional Student Association on Nov. 8 at the Lied Graduate Commons for First to Fly: Celebrating First Gens!

  • 3-4 p.m.: Panel discussion with 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty, staff, and students
  • 4-6 p.m.: Mixer with graduate registered student organizations and free headshots
