Biography

Nicholas Barr is an expert in youth, veteran and military homelessness, clinical social work, and mindfulness. His work focuses on intervention development and leveraging principles of mindfulness to enhance resilience and improve mental and behavioral health outcomes among young adults and current and former military members.

Prior to joining 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, Barr worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also served as a clinical social worker for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. 

Barr’s research examines the risk and protective factors for populations with an elevated likelihood of traumatic experiences, like homeless youth and military service members. Barr holds certifications in a number of evidence-based practices including prolonged exposure and cognitive behavior therapy.

The number of homeless veterans in Nevada has decreased by 41% since last year, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced last week. The VA, joined by other agencies, counted 644 veterans experiencing homelessness during one night in January, down from 1,094 in its 2023 count.

The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Tourist Safety Institute launched an eight-week emergency responder resilience program in August, designed to help Nevada State Police Highway Patrol officers improve their social and emotional wellness. The training focuses on mindfulness, emotional regulation, attention control, and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships to help officers manage the stresses of their profession.
