The explosion of legalized gambling has set the stage for a provocative new frontier in the world of risk-taking — betting markets for everyday events, ranging from Taylor Swift streams to hurricanes hitting major U.S. cities.

Did you see the total solar eclipse? If you were one of the lucky ones with cloudless skies on Monday (April 8), you might be hooked on eclipse chasing for the rest of your life. And if you were one of the unlucky ones stuck under clouds, well, there's always next time. But when is that next time? If you're willing to travel abroad, not that long: two years and change. But if you want to stay in the U.S., you'll be waiting a while: nearly a decade.

Starting this summer, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will administer a survey to faculty, staff and administrators to collect data on existing services and resources on campus that support the university’s mission as a Minority-Serving Institution. The survey is one piece of a larger strategy to promote student success among underrepresented student groups, but it serves as a launching point in identifying future areas of focus and charting engagement and changes over time.

Last week, an academic paper co-authored by Joshua Grubbs of the University of New Mexico and Shane Kraus of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ confirmed what many have suspected: Those who engage in sports betting are about twice as likely to binge drink than other types of gamblers and people who don’t wager at all.

A new study out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, shows a clear link between sports betting and alcohol use. "It's hidden. Often people go 8 to 10 years before they get help," said Dr. Shane Kraus, a professor of psychology, and the Director of the addictions lab at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.

An investigation is underway after pornographic material appeared suddenly via ZOOM during a public meeting in North Las Vegas hosted by the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office that involved young adults. Someone who joined the meeting participated in what’s called ‘ZOOM Bombing.’ It’s a trend seen nationwide where people join a video conference and make disruptive comments or share offensive videos. It became popular in 2020 during the start of the pandemic when schools and corporations transitioned to online meetings and classes.

Flight attendants are doing a lot more than just saying "hello" and offering a warm welcome when passengers board a plane.A message overlaid on a viral post shared by TikTok user Miva (@mrsmiva), who is a flight attendant, according to videos shared on her profile, says: "Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of politeness but also...to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly?"

Las Vegas isn’t on the direct path of today’s solar eclipse, but the partial covering will still be a sight worth seeing, says Francisco Silva, vice president for outreach at the Las Vegas Astronomical Society.
