The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ department of dance announces its 2018-19 concert season, "A Season Together." It features four unique concerts showcasing works created by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance faculty and BFA students, as well as collaborations with multiple departments within the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ College of Fine Arts and a biennial international collaboration with Korea National Sport University (KNSU).
Together 7
Oct. 19-20
The season kicks off with "Together 7," a biennial concert celebrating the longstanding partnership between two great institutions of dance. In 2006, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance partnered with KNSU department of dance to produce "Together," a concert of shared dance work. Over the past 12 years, an additional six concerts developed. Come celebrate our seventh collaboration, "Together 7."
The project allows 20 dance majors from KNSU to travel to Las Vegas, partner with 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance and present a concert of dance works at the Judy Bayley Theatre. While at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, there is an exciting week of master classes and a chance to see how the phenomenon of dance manifests itself in each country. When the concert ends, the journey continues. Twenty 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance majors will travel to Seoul, South Korea, and present the concert again; continue to experience the dance of Korea; and bask in the rich cultural offerings. 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance has a long tradition of international travel that broadens the aesthetic lives of young artists and emphatically proves that artists are citizens of the world, that the world is in need of art, and that dance is a powerful language that transcends words and borders.
"Together 7" features an exciting collaborative program of modern, jazz, ballet, and traditional Korean dance with choreography by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance faculty (Cathy Allen, Victoria Dale, Richard Havey, Louis Kavouras, and Dolly Kelepecz-Momot) and faculty from KNSU (James Jeon, Kim Hyun Nam, and Baek Hyun Soon). "Together 7" will include a special performance by College of Fine Arts Dean Nancy Uscher of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance composer Beth Mehocic’s Interactions, and lighting by new 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance design specialist Michael Jarett.
Synchronicities
Nov. 15-18
November promises an exciting collection of dances from the bachelor of fine arts dance majors. "Synchronicities" presents these works in the Alta Ham Fine Arts Dance Studio One (HFA, Room 111). 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ has been recognized by Backstage Magazine for its high-caliber choreography program.
Victoria Dale also will present a work in this concert that will travel and represent 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ at the International Association of Blacks in Dance International Conference in Dayton, Ohio, in January.
Collective Visions
March 1-2
51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ dance has a deep respect for dance and design. The department of dance is the only dance department in the nation with a dedicated degree program in dance lighting, design, and stage management. "Collective Visions" is a concert where choreographers, visual artists, composers, and design artists collaborate to produce unique dance environments and visual worlds.
Featuring choreography and design by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s award-winning faculty, Cathy Allen, Victoria Dale, Richard Havey, Michael Jarett, James Jeon, Beth Mehocic, Dolly Kelepecz-Momot, and Louis Kavouras, "Collective Visions" will be presented in the Judy Bayley Theatre.
Harmonious Motions
April 25-28
The season ends with "Harmonious Motions," a collection of works choreographed by the bachelor of fine arts majors in dance performance and choreography. This show will be presented in the Alta Ham Fine Arts Dance Studio One (HFA, Room 111).
Season tickets are now on sale for $60 at the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Performing Arts Center box office, located on the northeast end of campus attached to the south face of the parking garage. Discount tickets are available to seniors, military members, all students, 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ faculty and staff, and 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ alumni. Discounted season tickets are $32 and individual performance tickets are available for $10. Additional fees may apply.
