51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's Marjorie Barrick Museum presents "Just Like Me," a dynamic exhibition of illustrations from a variety of artistic genres, from March 25 to April 30 at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. Admission to the exhibition is free, and the museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The art showcased comes from children's books, paintings, drawings, photography, and self-portraits, which reflect the personalities and inventiveness of these extraordinary artists.
A diversity of ethnic backgrounds is represented in "Just Like Me," including Japanese American, African American, Latino, Jewish, Native American, and Australian-born American artists. The artists utilize watercolor, collage, pen and ink, mixed media, acrylic, oil, and gouache in their works on display. A personal statement recounting the artist's childhood memories, family stories, and experiences that influenced his or her decision to become an artist accompanies each self-portrait.
Artwork from fourteen children's books is highlighted in this colorful exhibition, designed to delight and encourage aspiring artists of all ages. In fact, many of the artists whose self-portraits are exhibited are well-known, award-winning artists who have chosen to illustrate children's books as a vehicle to share their cultural experiences.
"Just Like Me" is curated by Sylvia Nissley, an independent curator who previously organized "Shared Stories: Exploring Cultural Diversity," a successful exhibition of illustrations from children's books that toured several years ago with ExhibitsUSA.
