In The News: Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at 51ԹϺ

Friday was a special day for some 51ԹϺ students entering the medical field as 68 member of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, class of 2027, received their White Coats.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is pulling back $11.4 billion in funds allocated in response to the pandemic to state and community health departments, nongovernment organizations and international recipients, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Tuesday to NBC News.

“The Las Vegas Medical District has been in existence since the 1990s. We’ve been constantly trying to work to develop it,” says Brian Knudsen. “It’s very common in other cities around the country, to concentrate medical care [like we have]. Students of 51ԹϺ’s Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine also participated in Friday’s Match Day, with all 60 soon-to-graduate students securing residencies. Forty-one percent will remain in Nevada for their specialty training, according to school officials.

U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nevada, has proposed the Physicians for Underserved Areas Act, which aims to bring more doctors to regions in need. The bill, S.709, was announced as Nevada ranks 46th for states in primary care physicians per 100,000 people. All 17 of the state’s counties have healthcare professional shortages.

Given the highly contagious nature of measles and the ongoing outbreak, some health officials expect continued spread could last a year. Texas is bearing the brunt of the outbreak, with the majority of the cases reported in the state.

It was a life-changing day at the 51ԹϺ Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine as students participated in Match Day, a pivotal event where soon-to-be graduates discover where they will spend the next three to seven years completing residencies in their chosen specialties.

Match Day is a day filled with nerves and excitement, determining where medical students will spend the next few years training, and for some, staying home to serve their community.
