The Las Vegas Sands is donating $15 million to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ to create a new language learning institute. It’s called The Sands Institute for Chinese language and culture. The new institute will provide Mandarin learning courses for students and will also be available to anyone who is not a student.

Known as the Rebel Climate Action Plan (CAP), the document is a roadmap for how the school will meet its goal of slashing its greenhouse gas emissions 50 percent by 2030 and becoming net zero by the university’s 100th birthday in 2057. Net zero refers to a state where the carbon dioxide 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ is putting into the atmosphere is offset with the amount removed, thus not contributing to warming.

Monday is the first day of class for students at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. The university welcoming its largest enrollment of more than 32,000 students.
A year ago, an outside consulting firm started looking at Nevada’s higher education funding. Based on their recommendations, the Board of Regents is considering changing how those funds are allocated.
The building will have full-time security this fall following a campus shooting.
