For more than 25 years, the Women’s Council has advocated for women and collaborated with colleagues across campus to create institutional change at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and in our communities.

The five key areas of focus include:

  • Hiring, Retention and Assessment
  • Programming
  • Communication and Membership
  • Family Advocacy
  • Health and Safety

Mission

To ensure the voices of women at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ are heard and to advocate for a quality work life for women at all levels of the university. The Council will contribute to the creation, implementation, and monitoring of initiatives designed to ensure that women are treated equitably and respectfully and are valued and supported in pursuit of their professional and personal growth.

Council Leadership

The Council is led by a steering committee representing women from diverse backgrounds on campus. These women guide the work of the council and facilitate the council’s activities to achieve its mission.

Women’s Council Steering Committee

All academic, administrative, and classified staff are this remarkable group of women who serve and support the success of our university.

Our Partners

We partner with several organizations, both on campus and in the community, to support our efforts in creating an academic community in which women are respected, valued, and supported in their pursuit of personal and professional growth.

Women’s Research Institute of Nevada

The Women’s Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) operates as an administrative unit located in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. In operation since 1999, WRIN continues to develop innovative research, education, and outreach programs in support of women.

The Care Center

The Jean Nidetch Care Center offers confidential virtual support services, holistic healing workshops, campus education and awareness events to members of the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, NSC, and CSN communities impacted by sexual violence, relationship violence, family violence, and/or stalking.

Gender and Sexuality Studies

The Women’s Council supports the efforts of the Gender and Sexuality Studies academic degree program offered at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. Gender and Sexuality Studies is a relatively new field of study that seeks to correct institutional neglect, denial and devaluation of the study of women and gender in higher education. For students, this means learning how assumptions and policies regarding gender, race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, physical ability, nationality and other social dimensions shape the material conditions of men’s and women’s lives all over the world.
