About OWL Consultations
This service allows you to receive written feedback on your work without direct, real-time interaction. When you submit your essay, consultants spend a maximum of 45 minutes with each paper, leaving written comments related to global issues they find in your writing (e.g., clarity, argument, supporting evidence, organization). They will use the Google Docs comment function to give you suggestions and will not alter your writing in any way.
Benefits of OWL Consultations
The OWL may be most useful for:
- A final draft of your writing
- Drafts completed a few days before the deadline
- Receiving written feedback on general issues in your draft
- Shorter pieces of writing
Policies for OWL Consultations
Before you submit, be aware of the following:
- Length: Consultants will not review more than 5 double-spaced pages (or 1250 words). If your paper is more than 5 pages, we will only look at the first 5 pages unless you specify otherwise. We will only review one paper per submission.
- Limitations: We do not work on brainstorming, outlines, in-text citations, references/works cited pages, document formatting, or sentence-level concerns (grammar, punctuation, syntax) in an OWL consultation. Because we need to have a conversation with you to help you learn about these areas of writing, you should schedule an in-person consultation or virtual consultation.
- Required Email Address: You must give your Rebelmail address when filling out the form. Failure to use an @unlv.nevada.edu or @unlv.edu address will result in immediate rejection.
- Notifying an Instructor: We are able to notify your instructor, coach, and/or advisor of your consultation. Read our instructor notification policies for more information.

We accept a limited number of OWL submissions each day. You'll be notified if your submission is canceled so that you can make another type of appointment, if you wish.
Appointment Disclaimers
- You can make one OWL submission every 24 hours and two per week. Submissions in excess of this will be rejected.
- You may submit the same paper twice only if you have made revisions based on our comments between submissions or if you have a longer paper and want us to look at a different range of pages.
