English Composition Classes for International and Multilingual Students

Overview

The English Language Center offers first year composition classes which are specifically designed for international and multilingual students.

International and multilingual students can take ENG 113 and ENG 114 as an alternative route to satisfy the General Education requirement in English. ENG 113 is equivalent to ENG 101 and ENG 114 is equivalent to ENG 102.

Admission and Placement

ENG 113, ENG 113 E and F, and ENG 114 students must apply through 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Admissions. Students are placed in ENG 113, ENG 113 E and F based on their official English language proficiency test score.

English Composition Placement for Speakers of English as an Additional Language at the English Language Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Students place into classes based on standardized English language test scores or a placement test.

If you do not have a test score, please contact the English Language Center at 702-895-3925 or email elc@unlv.edu to schedule a testing appointment.  Only current students may take the writing placement test. 

To place into ENG 113E/F, equivalent to ENG 101E/F, a student needs to score any of the following:

  • 17 and below ACT ENGL
  • 200 - 470 SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (ERWS)
  • Overall 46 and 18 Writing TOEFL iBT
  • Overall 70 and 35 Writing MTELP**
  • Overall 5.5 and 5.5 Writing IELTS
  • Overall 40 Pearson English Language Test (Academic)

To place into ENG 113, equivalent to ENG 101, a student needs to score any of the following:

  • 18 - 29 ACT ENGL
  • 480 - 650 SAT Evidence-Based Reading &Writing (ERWS)
  • Overall 61 and 20 Writing TOEFL iBT
  • Overal 76 and 40 Writing MTELP**
  • Overall 6.0 and 6 Writing IELTS
  • B in Level 6 Academic Writing in the Intensive English Program
  • Overall 44 Pearson English Language Test (Academic)

To place into ENG 114, an equivalent to ENG 102, a student needs to score any of the following:

  • 30 - 36 ACT ENGL
  • 660 - 800 SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (ERWS)
  • 3-5 AP Composition Exams*
  • Overall 80 and 21 Writing TOEFL iBT
  • Overall 6.5 and 6 Writing IELTS
  • Overall 58 Pearson English Language Test Academic

*Advanced Placement is a program offered by the College Board that enables students to earn college-level credits and/or advanced placement while doing high school coursework. The final score is on a five-point scale. Students should take the English Language & Composition topic.**

Transfer of credits is determined by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Office of Admissions. Credits from regionally accredited institutions will be transferred. After admission, academic advisors can submit a course evaluation request through TES. Credits from non-US post secondary institutions recognized by a country’s Ministry of Education as a degree-granting institution will be considered for credit transfer. After admission, academic advisors can send a course evaluation request to the ELC at elc@unlv.edu.

Course Descriptions:

ENG 113E/F Composition I for International Students Extended (6cr.) is a two-part sequence completed in two semesters.

ENG 113E focuses on instruction in narrative, descriptive, expository writing for speakers of English as an additional language to be better served with a two-semester format for mastering academic writing.

ENG 113F focuses on the thesis driven essay. Following successful completion of ENG 113F, students may register for ENG 114.

ENG 113 Composition I for International Students (3cr.) is designed for speakers of English as an additional language to develop fluency and confidence in writing by extensive practice in the narrative, descriptive, and expository modes of discourse.

ENG 114 Composition II for International Students (3cr.) is a continuation of ENG 113 and ENG 113 E/F with emphasis on critical thinking and practice in persuasive discourse.

General Education Requirements: ENG 113/ENG 113E&F and ENG 114 fulfill the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ requirement for 6 credits of English Composition.
