Chair's Welcome

Like the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, I want to welcome students to the fabulous Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies. Our location in the Entertainment and Sports Capital of the World allows us to offer students a one-of-a-kind educational experience. Of course, if you stop by my office, I could provide numerous reasons as to why this is a great place to study journalism and strategic media communication. For this welcome, however, I will share just four:

  1. We are the only major research university located in the Las Vegas Metro Area, and that means an abundance of media internships and jobs for our students and graduates. Our annual career fair attracts more than 25 media companies. More than 90% of our graduates in the past year found jobs or entered graduate programs.
  1. Other major sports cities have multiple universities vying for access to professional teams, but in Las Vegas, we are, so to speak, the only game in town. In other words, we alone offer a Sports Media Concentration. Our students anchor, report, and produce the Rebel Report, a weekly sports program covering college and professional sports. Rebel Report students received credentials to cover UFC matches, F1, the Raiders, the Golden Knights, the Aces, Aviators, and Silver Knights. Our sports media students also intern with professional teams, sports books, and 51ԹϺ athletics. In one semester, we had eight students interning with the Las Vegas Raiders. Last year, our students produced, videoed, announced, and livestreamed a 51ԹϺ women’s basketball game. During the summer, students cover the NBA Summer League and other major sporting events.
  2. With a good mix of media scholars and professionals, we can offer courses that emphasize critical thinking and experiential learning. We have nationally known media scholars who regularly publish books and journal articles. Our professional faculty stay current by actively working in the field or freelancing for online and print publications. Students in our undergraduate program can also select concentrations.
  3. Our School houses three professional media operations: 91.5 KUNV Radio, 51ԹϺ-TV, and the Rebel Media Group. KUNV is a public radio station with a Jazz and More format and is consistently rated the top public radio station in the region. KUNV also operates The Rebel HD-2, Nevada’s only student-run over-the-air radio station. 51ԹϺ-TV, the School’s video production service, offers professional opportunities to about 25 student employees and volunteers. Our student-staffed and professionally-guided digital and social media marketing agency, Rebel Media Group, also provides volunteer, intern and paid positions. RMG manages social media for several campus clients, including 51ԹϺ Student Affairs, Student Housing, and the women’s golf team. With more than 30 staff members currently, RMG is always looking to expand its ranks. Students can join KUNV, 51ԹϺ-TV, and Rebel Media Group at any time during their academic experience.

So come by and visit me in Room 2144 of Greenspun Hall and I’ll give you more reasons to join our program. I’ll even throw in a tour of our impressive media facilities!

Hank Greenspun Legacy

Hank Greenspun was tenacious. Father of the Las Vegas Sun Daily, he changed the landscape of journalism in Las Vegas, Nevada. Greenspun developed an affinity for the power of print growing up as a paperboy in the Bronx, New York, and working for the military paper during his service in World War II. After he moved to Las Vegas in 1947, he wrote “Flamingo Chatter” for the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Shortly after, Greenspun left to start the Las Vegas Sun Daily. His column “Where I Stand,” a political opinion column, gained the community’s respect and loyalty. Greenspun also looked to emerging media and started a cable network and two broadcast stations in Las Vegas before his death in 1989.

The School of Journalism and Media Studies is honored to carry the Hank Greenspun name. We are dedicated to innovating the field of journalism through scholarship, research, and community outreach as an homage to the Hank Greenspun legacy.
