Aquatics

Purpose

The primary responsibility as a lifeguard is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This person will need to be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards must be able to enforce pool policies and be able to communicate effectively why policies are in place.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Required.
  • Current CPR/ First Aid/AED Certifications Required.
  • Must be a 51ԹϺ student and available to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week.
  • Minimum GPA requirements: Semester GPA: 2.0 Cumulative GPA: 2.0

Physical Demands

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Purpose

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator for Aquatics, and consistent with the Campus Recreational Service’s mission, the lifeguard instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control, and safety of all class participants. The lifeguard instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all materials and equipment used for lifeguard instruction. It is the lifeguard instructor's responsibility to observe and direct all class participants, and to provide feedback and appropriate correction as instructed or included in the job description.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Required. 
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification Required. 
  • Current CPR/ First Aid/AED Certifications Required.

Purpose

The purpose of being a Water Safety Instructor is to teach people how to be safe in, on and or around water and to teach people of all ages and varying abilities how to swim. Using a logical progression, the instructor will cover the knowledge and skills needed for aquatic skill development, which in turn, leads to safer and better swimmers. This position is responsible for planning, organizing and providing quality swimming and water safety instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification Required.
  • Current CPR/ First Aid/AED Certifications Required.
  • Must be a 51ԹϺ student and available to work during Learn to Swim sessions and take initiative to pick up private lessons.

Outdoor Adventures

Purpose

This position works collaboratively with the Outdoor Adventures Team and may have the responsibility of leading and/or assisting various outdoor trips including but not limited to: backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, surfing, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and camping. This person will provide programming for those that are 18 years or older, with varying abilities and skills, that are part of the 51ԹϺ community. By offering a variety of programs, we hope to champion the idea of Leave No Trace, as well as teach outdoor ethics, desert survival, and fun outdoor recreation outlets. The Trip Leader must be able to work with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competence while representing CRS. While being a Trip Leader requires a time commitment, it is rewarding job where you will meet great people, learn and develop technical and relational skills, and explore unique places!

Minimum Qualifications 

  • General outdoor interest
  • Must be at least 18 years old and an 51ԹϺ enrolled student in 6 credits or more.
  • Must attend all Instructor Training workshops/trips
  • Must have a current driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Variety of outdoor experience
  • Strong leadership and group facilitation skills.
  • Technical knowledge with outdoor equipment.
  • Previous experience driving 12 – 15 passenger vans.

Certification Requirement

  • American Red Cross certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED - full cost covered by the department

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain safety of all trips as the number one priority
  • Share the responsibility with driving and co-piloting a 12 passenger van
  • Respond to and follow all risk management/emergency procedures

Purpose

This position is responsible for the daily rental operations for the Outdoor Adventures Program, which includes taking reservations and preparing outgoing equipment orders. This person must be able to demonstrate effective decision-making and critical thinking skills to ensure the best customer service and safety for patrons by maintaining, cleaning, organizing, and repairing Outdoor Rental Equipment. Individuals must have general knowledge about outdoor equipment and be able to work collaboratively with the Outdoor Adventures Team. Outdoor Rental Equipment is not only sought out by the 51ԹϺ community, but from  visitors worldwide. This individual must be able to effectively communicate with diverse populations, demonstrate a positive and welcoming environment, and demonstrate cultural competence while representing CRS.

Minimum Qualifications

  • General knowledge about outdoor equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the use and care of outdoor camping equipment, backpacking gear, and canoe/kayak gear

Purpose

This position is responsible stripping holds, cleaning holds and setting new boulder problems on the boulder wall located at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC). This position will be responsible for instructing patrons on various bouldering workshops as assigned. This person must be able to demonstrate effective decision-making and critical thinking skills to ensure the best setting of boulder problems while using industry safety techniques. Individuals must have general knowledge of boulder wall setting and be able to work collaboratively with the Outdoor Adventures Setting Team. This individual must be able to effectively communicate with diverse populations, demonstrate a positive and welcoming environment, and demonstrate cultural competence while representing Campus Recreation Services (CRS).

Minimum Qualifications 

  • General rock climbing experience
  • Must attend all setting trainings
  • Hard work ethic and ability to think outside of the box
  • Must follow all safety policies when setting problems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous indoor rock climbing setting experience 
  • Active rock climber
  • Able to set boulder problems in a timely and efficient manner

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strip holds using an impact driver, clean holds using a pressure washer, then setting new boulder problems using an impact driver.
  • Setters will work as a team and utilize each other to forerun boulder problems to ensure safety and quality of the boulder problem

  • Maintain, clean, inspect climbing holds, volumes and hardware

Purpose

This position is responsible for the daily bike rental/repair operations for the Outdoor Adventures Program, which includes inspecting bikes for patrons, presenting a quote for repairs and repairing/ tuning the bike for the patron. Another aspect of this position is to assist patrons in daily rental operations of mountain bikes and to assess the bike before/after the rental transaction. This person must be able to demonstrate effective decision-making and critical thinking skills to ensure the best customer service and safety for patrons by maintaining, cleaning, organizing, and repairing bikes. Individuals must have general knowledge of bike maintenance and be able to work collaboratively with the Outdoor Adventures and Facilities Attendant Team. This individual must be able to effectively communicate with diverse populations, demonstrate a positive and welcoming environment, and demonstrate cultural competence while representing Campus Recreation Services (CRS).

Minimum Qualifications

  • General bike mechanic interest

Purpose

This position is responsible for the daily front desk operations of CRS. Candidates must be able to demonstrate effective decision-making and critical thinking skills to ensure the best customer service and safety for patrons. Individuals must be assertively friendly and have a working knowledge about facilities and services provided to members and must take pride in the quality of their work by demonstrating effective communication and initiative. Individuals must also be able to work with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competence while representing CRS. Collaboration and ability to work closely with others is required for success in this position.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage entrance into the SRWC, with card swipe into RecTrac Software.
  • Enforce all policies of CRS.
  • Maintain cleanliness of SRWC front desk area.
  • Check-out and check-in equipment from equipment room, using RecTrac Software.
  • Wash and fold towels.
  • Record racquetball reservations.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to start of scheduled shift (except where otherwise stated).
  • Dress and appearance are consistent with CRS standards.
  • Answer guest questions regarding CRS facilities, programs, and services by phone and in-person.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of RecTrac.
  • Handle all cash transactions.
  • Familiarize themselves with and sell all items in the Pro-Shop.
  • Reconcile shift cash transactions and deposit after each shift.
  • Maintain communication with other CRS facility team members in regards to schedule conflicts and any and all work related issues.
  • Report any discrepancies to the Graduate Assistant, Facilities or Facility Coordinator Memberships and Facility Operations.
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings.

Purpose

This position is responsible for daily operations of the SRWC while on shift. Candidates must be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills. This person will enforce all building policies and be able to communicate to a diverse group of patrons why the policies are in place. A Building Manager is responsible for the supervision of all student employees and will act as an effective leader and mentor to the employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have one semester of student employment experience within Campus Recreation at the SRWC in any area (facilities, intramurals, sport clubs, fitness, aquatics).
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certifications Required.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week.
  • Minimum GPA requirements: Semester GPA: 2.0 Cumulative GPA: 2.0

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of student employment experience within Campus Recreation at the SRWC in any area (facilities, intramurals, sport clubs, fitness, aquatics).

  • Experience in multiple positions in Campus Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act in the role of a supervisor on duty for the facility.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work space.
  • Arrive at least fifteen minutes prior to scheduled shift.
  • Assist any and all Student Recreation and Wellness Center staff when needed.
  • Responsible for the opening and closing of the SRWC facility.
  • Cash handling and backup to the Cash Drawer Attendant.
  • Dress and appearance are consistent with SRWC standards including wearing a med-pack at all times.
  • Knowledge of all programs, services, and facilities of the SRWC including Rebel Wellness Zone, Fitness, Intramurals, Sport Clubs and Aquatics.
  • Provide tours of the facility upon request of potential members, students, etc.
  • Knowledge of computer software, including Rec Trac, When-to-Work, Time Clock Plus, Google Docs, Gmail.
  • Knowledge of all equipment and equipment set-up and tear-down throughout building for Special Events, Tournaments and Open Recreation requests. (volleyball, badminton, floor hockey, table tennis).
  • First responder to all SRWC emergencies, including preparation of paper work after emergencies.
  • Act in a professional manner by upholding SRWC policy when involved in conflict management with patrons, students and staff.
  • Proper radio protocol and response in a timely manner, includes radio communication to SRWC, Wellness and Custodial Staff.
  • Supervise all on-shift staff members in all SRWC managed spaces (including IM fields).

Purpose

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations for the Fitness Program, which includes oversight and supervision of the fitness areas. This person must be able to demonstrate effective decision-making and critical thinking skills to ensure the best customer service and safety for patrons by educating patrons regarding policies, procedures and proper equipment usage, and provide general care and maintenance of equipment and facilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student of University of Nevada Las Vegas
  • Personal commitment and interest to fitness and wellness
  • Ability to work at least 6 hours per week
  • Must be CPR/AED certified within the first 30 days of employment

Physical Requirements

  • Position requires ability to lift, push, and move equipment approximately 45 pounds in weight
  • Position requires being on your feet and walking

  • Experience with the use and operations of various fitness equipment and exercises

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor members in designated areas of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center to ensure safety and well-being during participation

Purpose

This position is responsible for completing administrative duties in the Student Wellness Zone. Wellness Zone Attendants are trained students who work the front desk of the Student wellness Zone to provide positive experiences to those who utilize this area. The Wellness Zone Attendant is responsible for standard office and receptionist duties including filing, data entry, scheduling appointments, cash handling, cleaning and organizing the office space.

Purpose

This position is responsible for providing personalized training sessions to help clients reach specific goals. Purpose

Group fitness instructors will lead members, in a group environment, though safe and effective fitness classes for Campus Recreational Services. This position is responsible for providing group exercise fitness instruction and supervision in variety of formats. Candidates must be able to instruct multiple fitness levels and ensure the safety of all patrons in the class. This person will enforce all building policies pertaining to group exercise and be able to communicate these to a diverse group of patrons why policies are in place. The instructor will serve as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness and wellness and are responsible in ensuring that safety of the members is not compromised. A group fitness instructor will act as a role model and resource for all patrons and staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have completed level 1 Fit Training Course OR
  • Must have a current nationally recognized fitness certification in Group Fitness

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications Required (upon one semester of hire date)
  • Must be available to teach a minimum of 2 classes per week

Intramural Sports

Purpose

This position, under the direction of the Program Coordinator and Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports, is responsible for officiating and assisting in the administration of all events of the Intramural Sports Program. Individuals holding this position must be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills. This person will enforce all program and building policies and be able to communicate to a diverse group of patrons why the policies are in place. The Intramural Sports Official is responsible for the effective in game operations on the field or court to which they are assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a current 51ԹϺ student enrolled in at least 6 credits.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
  • Must have open availability from 5-11pm Monday through Thursday. May require occasional weekend responsibilities.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. 
  • Must be able to continuously move and be on your feet for 3-4 hours a night.
  • Minimum GPA requirements: Semester GPA: 2.0 Cumulative GPA: 2.0

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience participating in high school sports.
  • Experience officiating at any level.

Task

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure playing area is always safe for competition.
  • Ensure participants and spectators are safe, in their designated areas, and acting appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of officiating experience across multiple sports.
  • Experience in both the Officiating and Program Assistant position. 
  • Understanding or experience with technology such as I-Pads, Go-Pros, and Microsoft Office

Task

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act in the role of a supervisor on duty for the program or event.
  • Arrive at least five minutes prior to scheduled shift.
  • Responsible for the set-up and tear down of the Intramural Sports events.
  • Dress and appearance are consistent with SRWC standards.
  • Effective communication and delegation of duties on to Intramural Sports student staff.
  • First responder to all Intramural Sports accidents and incidents, including preparation of paper work afterwards and any potential activation of the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Act in a professional manner by upholding SRWC policy when involved in conflict management with patrons, students and staff.
  • Proper radio protocol and response in a timely manner, includes radio communication to Building Managers and Professional Staff.
  • Supervise all on-shift staff members of the Intramural Sports Program.
  • Assist in the Intramural Sports Office as needed.
  • Assist as needed in the resolution of protests and conflicts that may arise during game play.
  • Ensure sportsmanlike conduct and provide written reports on all incidents, protests, ejections, etc.
  • Ensure proper completion of all scoring documents and daily report forms.
  • Must be willing and able to act as an Official or Program Assistant each day when necessary.

Staff Development

  • Must act as a role model for fellow staff members both in work and play settings.
  • Maintain a standard of performance on daily tasks.
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of staff training sessions.
  • Perform regular evaluations of student staff as assigned by Professional Staff.
  • Attend regularly scheduled programmatic meetings and trainings for all areas necessary.
  • Maintain communication with Intramural Sports Professional Staff members regarding positive recognition, performance reviews, substitution, and schedule conflicts.
  • Communicate clear and concise information as needed to patrons, students, and emergency medical service personnel and police services.
  • Practice peer education to develop student staff growth and success.
  • Assist with hiring and training of all new Intramural Sports Staff.
  • Adhere to all SRWC guidelines and Intramural Sports policies.

Criteria for Success

Intramural Supervisors will be evaluated on their performance each semester. The staff evaluation process consists of a self-evaluation, peer evaluation, and supervisor evaluation. The staff evaluation measures the following objectives:

  • Ability to demonstrate the difference between a supervisee and friend.
  • Ability to promote and enforce program and department policy as written.
  • Ability to display a positive attitude for all patrons and CRS staff.

Sport Clubs

Purpose

This position, under the direction of the Program Coordinator and Graduate Assistant for Sport Clubs, provides direction and support for club officers and members by serving as a liaison between Sport Club Officers and CRS Professional Staff. Individuals holding this position must be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  •  Must be a current 51ԹϺ student enrolled in at least 6 credits.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week.
  • Must have open availability evenings, Monday through Friday. May require occasional weekend responsibilities.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. 
  • Minimum GPA requirements: Semester GPA: 2.0 Cumulative GPA: 2.0

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Previous or current experience as a Sport Club Officer, or relatable knowledge of a majority of the twelve Sport Club programs.
  • Experience in leadership, management, and/or administrative capacities. 
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

Task

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership, administrative support, and customer service to the assigned Sport Club(s)
  • Attend Sport Club home events and assist with game management, event set-up/breakdown, and communication between teams, officials, and athletic trainers. 
  • Enforce all policies of the Sport Club Handbook
  • Maintain weekly office hours in order to supervise, advise, and maintain communication among designated clubs.
  • Responsible for making sure that all active teams and their spectators follow all facility, Sport Club, and university policies.
  • Assist with Sport Club daily operations such as opening/closing field space and meeting rooms, setting up areas with equipment appropriate for scheduled activities.
  • At any home event, serve as a first responder in emergencies and follow emergency protocols set by SRWC.
  • Document all incidents or injuries objectively and thoroughly, and collect statements from those involved as well as any witnesses.
  • Act in a professional manner by upholding SRWC policy if involved in conflict management with club athletes, spectators, students, and staff.
  • Maintain dress and appearance that are consistent with SRWC standards.
  • Ensure timely and proper completion of all documents and forms.
  • Other duties as assigned by the professional staff.

Youth Camps

Purpose

The youth camp counselor position will assist in the implementation of youth camps at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas through the Campus Recreation department. This position will actively participate and supervise the overall daily camp operations, collaborate with the coordinator to administer a comprehensive camp for children, and demonstrate and teach different activities daily. The youth camp counselor will report directly to the Program Coordinator for Youth Programs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a current 51ԹϺ student.
  • Meet minimum semester and cumulative GPA requirements: Semester GPA: 2.0 Cumulative GPA: 2.0
  • Completion of Sheriff’s Card, TB test, and mandated reporter training once hired.
  • Adult and child CPR, AED, First Aid (Training will be provided if necessary).
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 20-30 hours per week.
  • Must be creative, innovative, and enjoy working with children.
  • Ability to communicate, supervise, and relate to children of varying ages, abilities, and 
  • backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in Youth Camps or Program.
  • Strong leadership and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Learn and follow all Campus Recreational Services policies and procedures.
  • Know the location of all assigned campers at all times.
  • Coordinate pick-up and drop-off amongst parents, campers, and staff.
  • Fill out incident reports and injury reports to be given to program coordinator, when needed.
  • Ability to adjust curriculum for the specific needs of campers.
  • Administer first aid, handle emergency situations, and contact emergency services as necessary.
  • Assist in engaging campers throughout the duration of camp. 
  • Facilitate daily activities that meet the needs and interests of the camps’ target populations and ensure the delivery is in a safe and quality manner.
  • Implement all risk management procedures including but not limited to First Aid/CPR/AED response, emergency evacuations, missing camper procedures (internal and external), mandated reporting, etc. 
  • Responsible for evacuation of camp participants when emergencies occur.
  • Teach and lead various sports, fitness, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, life skills, and teamwork skills.
  • Maintain an open line of communication between campers, parents, and program coordinator

Staff Development

  • Must act as a role model for campers and fellow staff members.
  • Maintain a standard of performance on daily tasks.
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings for all areas necessary.
  • Maintain communication with other Campus Recreational Services Team members regarding positive recognition, performance reviews, substitution, and schedule conflicts.

Marketing

Purpose

The different areas within Campus Recreational Services include Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Fitness, Aquatics, Outdoor Adventures, and Special Events. The purpose of this position is to allow students the opportunity to use their graphic design skillset and knowledge of design programs to market and promote the programs and services we offer. The Graphic Designer will be able to use their creativity and critical thinking skills to draw the attention of the 51ԹϺ community to increase involvement and enhance their collegiate experience. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous graphic design experience (classwork of job experience)
  • Familiarity with the following software/OS: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Windows, Mac
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student taking a minimum of 6 credits at 51ԹϺ
  • Knowledge of typography, layout design, DPI, and image resolution
  • Ability to generate original and creative content and ideas

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Familiarity with marketing and/or social media content generation

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Design marketing materials for all Campus Recreation program areas which includes Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Fitness, Aquatics, Membership, Outdoor Adventures, and Special Events.
  • Continue to enhance their working knowledge of design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Be adept in design research, concept building, brainstorming, revision techniques, layout design, proofreading, and assessment of graphical elements.
  • Provide effective and efficient designs for large and small scale digital/print materials under strict deadlines 
  • Incorporate client’s feedback and detailed specifications into all design projects 
  • Brainstorm new design ideas as requested and bring them to execution 
  • Resolve potential project conflicts through problem-solving, suggestions, and alternative ideas
  • Schedule consultations and oversee the completion of design projects for each department
  • Organize design material and archive projects as they are completed
  • The Graphic Designer must also be able to work with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competence while representing CRS.
  • Collaboration and ability to work closely with others is required for success in this position.
