Health Benefits
Health coverage for medical residents begins on the first day of month. The group health insurance plan offers medical, dental, vision, term life insurance, and long term disability for employees and it is paid 100% by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine.
Students can obtain medical coverage for a spouse or domestic partner, or dependents paid 100% by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine. Dental and vision coverage is available but paid 100% by the medical resident.
Each of the insurance providers for medical residents has a Member Services office that can answer specific and general questions about benefits, including the status of enrollment or physical cards. Please contact:

Making Changes to your Selected Benefit Plans
Medical residents can add or remove dependents in Workday via the Benefits worklet within 30 days of the qualifying event.

Time Off and Leave
Annual Leave
Medical residents receive 15 days of annual leave at the start of the fiscal year.
Requesting Leave
Time off requests are submitted to the program coordinator and approved by the supervisor before being entered on Workday.
Annual Leave Carryover
Annual leave which is unused will not be carried forward to the new training year (fiscal year).
Annual Leave Payout at Separation
Medical residents are not paid for any unused annual leave upon termination of employment.
Sick Leave
Medical residents receive 15 days of sick leave the first day of employment. After one year, residents accrue 15 days of sick leave at the start of the fiscal year. Sick leave is paid time off and may be used for:
- Personal illness
- Care of an ill family member
- Doctor appointments
- Death in the family
Requesting Leave
Time off requests are submitted to the program coordinator and approved by the supervisor before being entered on Workday.

Fifteen days of leave may be carried over each month.

ACGME Medical Resident/Fellow Leave
The ACGME Medical Resident/Fellow Leave provides each resident/fellow with up to six (6) weeks (30 working days) of paid, approved medical, parental, or caregiver leave of absence for qualifying reasons that are consistent with applicable laws. This leave may be taken at any time during the resident's/fellow’s program, starting on the day the resident/fellow is required to report. If the medical resident/fellow also qualifies for FMLA, this leave will run concurrently with FMLA.
Wellness
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a University of Nevada, Las Vegas sponsored program. The EAP is managed by . The program provides all employees with assistance to address personal everyday challenges and obtain resources and information needed to support positive change and improve your well-being.
The program provides:
- Emotional support for issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, greif, loss, and life
- Qualified referrals and resources for finding child and elder care, hiring movers, home repair contractors, planning events and locating pet care
- Legal guidance and resources for divorce, adoption, family law, wills, trusts, and more
- Financial experts who can assist with retirement planning, taxes, relocation, mortgages, insurance, budgeting, debt, and bankruptcy
- Online information tools and support such as podcasts, articles, videos, slideshows
- On-demand training
The faculty/staff wellness webpage also provides on-campus resources based on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness.
Tuition Assistance and Professional Development
Medical residents, their spouses, and dependent(s) are considered in-state residents for tuition purposes. There is no additional aid provided.
Learning & Development
A variety of personal and professional development opportunities are available to develop and enhance our workforce including:

- Management Training Academy
- Real Colors
- Leadership Coaching Program
These programs are available from our Learning & Development unit.
Retirement
University employees do not participate in Social Security. Instead, dental residents are required to participate in a mandatory 403(b) retirement plan. Vesting is immediate.
- 6.2% of the employee’s gross salary is contributed, the university matches the contribution
- Contributions are automatically deducted from paychecks on a tax-deferred basis
- Both the employee and the employer contributions are invested, at the direction of each participant, into a 403(b) account
- Participants have the ability to choose the investments available within the plan
- TIAA is the sole record keeper for this plan

Withdrawal
Participants are eligible to withdraw funds from the plan when they:
- Separate employment
- Are age 59½ even if still employed
- Die (via designated beneficiary)
